Description
Brendan the Navigator or Brénainn moccu Alti is the patron saint of boatmen, travelers, elderly adventurers and whales. Born in 489, according to the legend of St. Brendan, he was seventy years old when he and his crew of monks set sail on a westward voyage in a curragh, a wood-framed boat covered in sewn ox-hides. After sailing for seven years, they reached “the Land of Promise of the Saints” and returned home with fruit and precious stones found there.
